Academic Medical Centers

  • Clinical Service Line Strategic Plans – SVH led planning processes to strengthen and standardize the service line model for this academic medical center, and to position the programs for growth and improved financial performance. This work involved addressing physician alignment for a wide range of specialties, access challenges, and the level and type of organizational support needed including a service line governance model to achieve the goals. The project approach included strategies to engage physician stakeholders and secure buy-in and facilitation of retreats. We were engaged to provide implementation support.
  • Cancer Strategic Plan – SVH was engaged to develop a cancer strategic plan for this health system that includes an academic medical center and community hospitals. We provided a disease-specific regional care delivery model and physician staffing plan. We proposed strategies to increase internal referrals and improve access. We developed plans for disease site program development, and helped to design a disease site contribution margin analysis that would enable better management of revenue and expenses.
  • Community Outreach and Population Health Plan – SVH supported an initiative to stand up a population health office for an academic medical center. This involved establishing an internal oversight committee, developing a staffing and resource plan for the office, and launching some initial projects.

“The unique strength of SVH is their deep bench of consultants with decades of experience in both formulating high level strategy and seeing it through to success with focused implementation.”

~ Physician Director, Cancer Institute

Healthcare Systems

  • Cancer Strategic Plan – SVH conducted an assessment across the four markets of this regional health system and developed a strategic plan. We recommended a governance and operating model for their cancer program that would standardize the care delivery model and position the organization for growth. This work included strategies to improve physician alignment, expand clinical trials, and re-focus its relationship with an NCI-designated cancer center.

“Donna O’Brien was able to help our organization crystalize and implement a successful multi-specialty and comprehensive cancer program model within two years when we had been struggling to do this for over ten years.”

~ CEO, Regional Health System

Medical Schools

  • Cancer Clinical Trial Consortium Assessment – SVH conducted an assessment of the medical school’s cancer clinical trials program (which was a consortium model with its hospital affiliates) with a goal of expanding trials, improving efficiency of the operation, and increasing open studies and accrual. We developed a new operating model between the medical school and the hospital consortium members and provided implementation support.
  • Cancer Clinical Trial Assessment – SVH was engaged to assess the cancer clinical trials program to identify administrative and clinical culture barriers to achieving accrual targets. Recommendations were disease and cancer-specialty specific.
  • Cancer Community Outreach and Engagement Plan – SVH was engaged by a medical school to support the development of a community outreach and engagement plan for the Cancer Center. During a follow-on engagement, we assisted with the implementation of recommendations.

“Donna is expert at assessing circumstances and determining what is possible at each stage of the process. The remarkable growth in both volume and quality of service in our cancer center over the past seven years has been due to the talents and efforts of many people who work here, but we would not have succeeded without Donna’s careful guidance through the entire process.”

~ Chair of Medicine, Academic Medical Center

Government Research Institutes

  • National Cancer Program Development for Research Institute – the National Cancer Institute engaged Donna O’Brien for a multi-year initiative to lead the planning and implementation of a new approach to engage community hospitals. The goals were to support increased access to state-of-the-art cancer care, create an expanded platform for clinical trials in community hospitals, and introduce new strategies to address cancer disparities in care and clinical trials. The NCI Community Cancer Centers Program was organized as a public-private partnership between the NCI and 30 hospitals and health systems; it operated as a learning collaborative. The external evaluation showed that the program was successful in improving access to care and the quality of care for diverse and underserved populations, and in expanding the number of open clinical trials and accrual of diverse and underserved populations.

Consortiums

  • Disease site Regional Consortium Strategic Plan – SVH led a strategic planning process for this regional disease consortium that included eleven adult and pediatric centers, and two community-based organizations. The goal was to increase the impact of the consortium on clinical care and research. The plan included retreat facilitation to determine priorities, the development of a new governance and operational model, and refinement on its relationship with national organizations. We were also engaged to provide implementation support.
  • Children’s Regional Behavioral Health Network Development – SVH facilitated planning retreats to launch this regional network which had a goal of supporting coordinated and comprehensive strategies to address the child and adolescent behavioral health crisis. The network includes hospitals; community-based agencies and organizations; schools; foundations; and state and federal government representatives.
  • Primary Care Collaborative – SVH was engaged to support planning for a regional primary care network of providers that served a diverse and low-income population. We supported the development of a governance structure and plans to address priority issues including coordinated input for a CMS waiver that led to enhanced funding for primary care.
  • Community Collaboratives – A multi-state health system engaged us to facilitate the development of community collaboratives to support care of un and under-insured populations in nine different markets with a goal of improving access to care.

Foundations

  • Research for a Funding Strategy – A foundation engaged SVH to conduct research to inform their healthcare funding strategy and priorities and the development of an RFP.

Housing

  • Housing and Health Collaborative Development – SVH served as an advisor to this not-for-profit housing program with over 50 apartment buildings serving a low-income population. Their goal was to develop services to support the residents. This work involved identifying needs and developing community partnerships to meet those needs. Areas of focus included health, behavioral health, social services, after school programs, and programs for aging in place.
